How did this happen? Up until recently I was responsible for restricting computer users in the corporate network environment from accessing web sites like Facebook, MySpace, and Hotmail. So how ironic is it I evolved from being the “Social Media police” to posting a blog about using Facebook for business? Quite simply, the corporate world is now embracing social networking sites as rapidly as it did casual fridays, virtual offices, IM and emailing from blackberries while waiting for your venti-skim- non-fat latte. The Business world is evolving and organizations don’t want to be left behind.
Facebook was once perceived as a college communication forum for students to make quick posts, share pictures or simply write on people’s walls with some witty saying (or not). The conventional “bulletin board” was replaced by Facebook…the difference is you now know who wrote “You are a dork!” on your wall.
When Facebook began gaining momentum, marketing companies seized the opportunity to place targeted ads to Facebook users. (similar to Google) How did these companies know I was single and enjoyed baseball??..it’s on my profile…duh!
While Facebook opens up many opportunities for organizations, the transparency of it promotes the risk people will receive and provide TMI..(Too Much Information). As recently as 2 years ago, many people did not understand the synergy of Facebook and business. The truth is you have been doing some form of social networking all along if you have been involved in business, especially in a customer facing environment.
Understandably you may be a bit uneasy posting pictures or comments for your friends, that your co-workers, bosses or clients may see. Fortunately, social environments such as Facebook provide tools to protect and control your online presence. You just have to locate them…Here are a few resources to assist you:
